HANAPEPE — The Koloa Junior Pee Wees improved in the standings following a 13-0 win over the Hanapepe Colts JPW, Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium.
Bronson Laborte opened the books for Koloa on a one-yard charge at the 3:37 mark of the opening period and graced that score with a run-in of the point-after for the 7-0 lead that stood until the fourth quarter.
Ryan Banasihan found a hole up the middle and pushed two yards to paydirt against the Hanapepe line that bolstered the strong side to yield the score.
The Lihu‘e Patriots’ Aaron Renaud was perfect with two point-after boots to help the Lihu‘e JPW take a 16-0 win over the Kapa‘a Eagles JPW.
That Lihu‘e JPW win put the redshirts in the lead of their division with a 5-1 record and 10 points, challenged heavily by the Eagles with a 4-1-1 record and nine points.
Lihu‘e lit up the boards at the 3:58 mark of the first quarter when Lanakila Wilson found Austin Aquis on a 19-yard scoring pass with Renaud doing the PAT boot for the 8-0 nod that stood until the final quarter.
With less than two minutes remaining in the match, Ryland Peahu pushed into the end zone on a one-yard touchdown with Renaud icing the victory with his second PAT boot.
The results of Saturday’s Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League games set the stage for Saturday’s matches at the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium when Kapa‘a Eagles JPW (4-1-1) face Koloa JPW starting at 1:30 p.m.
The Kekaha JPW square off against Hanapepe in the morning series starting at 9 a.m.
Kapa‘a Eagles Junior Midgets chalked up another win to remain undefeated when Rashaan Kuhaulua threw for two touchdowns and kicked a field goal. Leevi Bethel ran for two 40-yard scores in the Eagles’ 31-8 win over the Lihu‘e Patriots Junior Midgets.
Kuhaulua notched all of his scores in the first half, opening on a 26-yard scoring pass to Bethel at the 6:31 mark of the first period. He added to that score with a successful point-after boot for the 8-0 bulge.
Aaron Cummings was the recipient of Kuhaulua’s second TD pass, which opened the second quarter, pulling in a 27-yard pass that was followed by another Kuhaulua point-after boot less than a minute into the period.
Kuhaulua gave the Eagles a 19-0 halftime lead with a field goal at the 4:02 mark.
The Patriots answered in the third period when Chanse Ramirez hit Kanoa Iwasaki for a 50-yard scoring strike at the 6:25 mark of the third period. Iwasaki booted the point-after for the 19-8 deficit.
On the ensuing drive, Bethel chalked up his first 40-yard scoring drive at the 4:15 mark and added his second scoring run at the 4:41 mark of the fourth quarter. The point-after failed on both scores.
That win keeps the Eagles undefeated at 6-0 with 12 points while Lihu‘e drops to 1-5 and two points in a three-way tie with the Hanapepe Colts (1-4) and Kekaha (1-4).
The Koloa Junior Midgets, taking a 20-19 nail biter over Hanapepe, Saturday, are in second place with a 5-1 record and 10 points, well within striking range of the lead.
Hanapepe opened with two touchdowns in the first quarter when Prestyn Parongao hit Clysen Agrade on a 51-yard scoring hit and connected with Patrick Keamoai-Strickland for a one-yard score for the 12-0 lead.
Koloa answered when Kelson Andrade hit Chase McFadden on a 20-yard touchdown and followed that with a 51-yard hit to Kendall Rivera with just 36 seconds remaining in the half.
Kyren Rapacon made the difference by running in the point-after following the first Koloa TD that came six seconds into the period for the 13-12 Koloa lead at the half.
Rapacon capped the day by scoring on a four-yard run with 4:38 showing in the third period. Andrade hit McFadden for the point-after that settled the score at 20-12.
Hanapepe answered at the 1:43 mark when Parongao hit Hazzard McDougall on a 17-yard touchdown pass with Clysen Andrade running in the point-after for the 20-19 final.
Those results set the stage for the afternoon series Saturday when Kapa‘a takes on Koloa. The JPW game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. followed by the Junior Midgets at 3:30 p.m. The Junior Midget matchup could prove to be the game of the week as Kapa‘a and Koloa are the top two leaders in the division, separated by a mere two points.
