LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a JV Warrior Zavier Cummings recovered a blocked punt and picked off an interception to lead the Warrior JV to a 19-6 win over Kaua‘i, Friday.
The win raised the Warrior varsity spirits, only to fall victim 38-0 to the Red horde in the evening’s varsity game for a Warrior split at Vidinha Stadium.
Cummings opened the scorebooks with the recovery of a blocked punt early on for the 6-0 bulge and followed that with a 35-yard return of a pass interception with 5:23 remaining in the half.
T.J. West kicked the point-after for the 13-0 margin.
Less than two minutes later, the Warrior JV defense raised its head again as Mahina Kaleimamahu plucked another Trey Aguano pass and returned it 35 yards to the end zone with 3:53 remaining in the half.
West successfully booted the point-after, but a Warrior penalty forced a re-kick that fell short for the 19-0 mark.
Kaua‘i’s only score came with 6:57 showing in the contest when Aguano hit Keoki Pantorilla for a 46-yard touchdown pass.
Grant Basquez’s point-after kick was blocked for the 19-6 final.
Kaua‘i, in the absence of its normal QB, John Das, has one more game remaining in its schedule, traveling to Hanapepe Stadium to take on the Waimea Menehune this Friday starting at 5 p.m.
This is Waimea’s Homecoming night and the JV Menehune have been undefeated this season.
