PUHI — The Kaua‘i High School boys air riflery team took the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation championship by a scant 23 points, Thursday.
Facing Waimea boys in a shootoff, Kaua‘i veteran shooters Shaun Koide and Tyler Navarro paced the Red Raiders, opening with scores of 91 and 90, respectively.
When the dust settled, Koide (91-80-79) and Navarro (90-85-70) netted high scores of the day with 250 and 245, respectively.
That compared favorably with the best shooters from Waimea, John Medeiros (88-86-70) and Bryle Rivera (84-87-72), who paced the Menehune boys with final tallies of 244 and 243, respectively.
With the win, the Kaua‘i boys will join the Waimea girls, who took the KIF division title earlier in the season, at the state meet on O‘ahu.
In addition to the five team shooters, the KIF will also send one individualist from the girls and one from the boys. That announcement will come at a future date.
Joining Koide and Tyler Navarro for the champion Kaua‘i boys, Travis Navarro (87-75-69-231), Reyn Morioka (78-80-63-221) and Sheldon Chu (88-74-59-221) figured in the KIF win.
Medeiros and Rivera were joined by Marius Fondilla (84-75-66-225), Wesley Sakamoto (87-85-45-217) and Benigo Baclig (70-80-67-217).
Of note in the shootoff, all eight of the Kaua‘i shooters marked 200-plus scores while seven of the eight Waimea shooters posted 200-plus scores.
The 2009 Civilian Marksmanship Program Hawai‘i State Air Riflery Championships will be held Oct. 27 at the Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall on O‘ahu.
