HA‘ENA — The county Department of Parks and Recreation has closed Ha‘ena Beach Park in preparation for the construction of a new comfort station, a county press release states.
The park will reopen upon completion of the project, which is tentatively set for early next year.
Shioi Construction was awarded $549,000 for the Ha‘ena Beach Park project, with $250,000 coming from the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority in the form of a grant, and the balance to be financed through the county’s capital improvement program.
“One of our top priorities is to expedite our CIP projects so jobs can be created and the economy will get a much-needed boost,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. in the release. “I am pleased that the Ha‘ena project is moving forward.”
Included in the scope of work that will be provided by Shioi Construction are the following tasks: demolish existing comfort station; construct new comfort station, sidewalks and parking stalls with ADA accessibility; and improve parking area.
The HTA grant received by the county was from the Tourism Special Fund, which is designated for projects that aim to improve priority natural resource sites frequented by visitors.
