Niumalu Canoe Club, paddling out of Kalapaki Kaua‘i, sent three crews – two Open and one Senior Masters – to the 2009 Na Wahine O Ke Kai race. The club’s first crew to finish was comprised of all Kaua‘i women and came in 15th overall. Making up that crew was Keala Wann, Lei Wann, Robin Jumper, Leigh Drachman, Shannon Brunner, Becky Snowden, Marleny Cotrim, Rachel Lim, Beth Kauwe and Emiko Meyers. The second crew to finish came in 43rd and had a number of first-time channel crossers. That crew was made up of Arlene Devitt, Angie Merritt, Amanda Gregg, Aulani Hall, Juli Bohmer, Kaulana Smith, Lori Parraga, Marianne Morimoto, Tara Palama and Susana Pulawa-Grubbe. Niumalu’s Senior Master’s crew came in fifth in their competitive division. This international crew consisted of Dianne Harrison, Heather Taylor, Joy Chow, JoAnne Woltmon, Joey Thompson, Kimberlee Stuart, Margaret Steinhart, Mary Pixler, Nancy Graf, Rani Lee Johns, Maureen Murphy and Sue Milligan. All three crews were coached by Arthur Chow, who will be competing in Sunday’s men’s race, the Molokai Hoe, which follows the same 41-mile trek from Molokai to O‘ahu. Emiko L. Meyers/Contributed photo
