LIHU‘E — In one half of Wednesday night’s Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation volleyball action, the Kaua‘i Red Raiders topped the Island School Voyagers 25-13, 25-14, 25-21 at the Island School Gym.
Kaua‘i (6-3) and Island (0-9) played tight during the first portion of the opening game and were locked up at 9-9. The Red Raiders then rattled off 10 of the next 12 points to take a 19-11 advantage and setter Waileia Kanealii closed out the game with an ace.
Kanealii had 10 assists in the opener with Reanna Javinar and Shyanne Sadora each finishing three kills. Krystin Yasay and Malia Kagawa added two kills apiece.
The second game played out very similarly, as Island School grabbed a 10-8 lead on a Michaela Sullivan ace. Kaua‘i then made another big run to take control of the contest, swiping 14 of the following 15 points to grab a 22-11 lead.
The game again ended on an ace, with Janessa Grady this time getting the final unreturned serve.
Sullivan had three assists, two digs and a kill for Island. Joy Claypoole had three blocks and a kill, while Lauren Claypoole added two digs.
Grady had nine assists for Kaua‘i, while Yasay had four kills.
Island stayed in the third contest all the way to the finish and held an 18-14 lead behind strong play from Sullivan, Kaulana Haneberg and Madison Duarte.
Kaua‘i coach Corey Morishita re-inserted Kanealii and Kagawa into the lineup and the duo brought the Raiders back, combining as an assist-kill combination on five straight Kaua‘i points to even the game up at 20-20.
The ace was the closing statement for the third time as Saryna-Brooke Garcia had aces on the match’s final two points to create the final tally.
Sullivan had four assists and a kill for Island. Duarte had three kills, while Haneberg had two kills, two digs and a block.
Kanealii finished with six assists in the game, Kagawa notched five kills and Sadora and Yasay each had two kills.
In JV action, Kaua‘i pulled out the three games by a 25-21, 25-15, 25-13 score.
In other Wednesday night action, the Waimea Lady Menehune improved to a perfect 9-0 on the season with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-23 win on their home floor over the Kapa‘a Lady Warriors (3-6).
In JV play, Waimea took two out of three games with a 25-23, 11-25, 25-19 victory.
Kaua‘i will now head home to host the Kapa‘a Lady Warriors, while Island hits the road to face the undefeated Waimea Lady Menehune. Each match will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
