SAN BERNADINO, Calif. — In the 2009 US Club Soccer National Cup VIII, Kaua‘i resident Dakota Barnett and the Honolulu Bulls 16U girls soccer team won the Under 16 Girls Super Group tournament, completing its championship run Tuesday in San Bernadino, Calif.
In the team’s first three games of pool play, it started with a 4-0 victory over Attack Green. Then they topped OSC Premier White, 1-0. They completed the table sweep with a 3-1 win over the Corona Eagles. The nine points were more than enough to move them into the Semifinals.
In that contest, they shut out the Arsenal ‘93 Premier squad, 2-0. The championship game pitted the Bulls against LAFC Chelsea. It turned out to be a close battle, but one in which the Bulls again did not allow a goal, winning by a 1-0 count.
Barnett, known by her nickname “Kodi,” scored three goals in the five-game span. Additionally, her four assists showed direct contributions to seven of the team’s 11 goals during its run to the regional championship.
She credits her training on Kaua‘i for allowing her to reach this point with her team, specifically noting the efforts of Nan Greer, Christian Marston, Auntie Gwen Tamura and Sonny Kaona.
The next step for the Bulls will be their run at the National Cup Finals, which takes place July 31-Aug. 3 in Virginia Beach, Va.
