Sam Dunham came from behind to defeat Harold Shimono Jr. 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the Boys No. 1 Singles match to help Island School take a 3-2 edge over Waimea Saturday at the Waimea High School courts.
The No. 1 Boys Doubles team of Jeremy Randolph-Flagg and Logan Domingo defeated the Waimea duo of Michael Haack and Joshua Ponting, 6-3, 6-2, and the Island School pair of Ryan Bender and Ryan Perez were a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Waimea’s Bryle Rivera and Kevin Toma on the Boys No. 2 Doubles court.
Waimea’s wins came with Darrel Nonaka defeating Hunter Coberly 6-0, 6-1 on the No. 2 Boys Singles court and the Menehune team of Ty Shitanaka and Chris Ajimura getting past the Island School duo of Ben Steuri and Dylan Morrison-Fogel, 7-6 (1), 6-2 in the Boys No. 3 Doubles match.
Saturday’s match marks the end of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation regular tennis season. Qualifying for the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state championships start Thursday at 8 a.m. at both the Po‘ipu Kai and the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa courts.
Finals for the qualifying rounds are scheduled for Friday.
