Entries for the 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship are being accepted.
The championship is scheduled to be played June 22-27 at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass. Cost to enter is $50 and deadline for receiving entries is May 9.
The championship is open to female amateur golfers who are public course players with an up-to-date Handicap Index not exceeding 18.4, states a release from the United States Golf Association.
Entry applications may be obtained by calling the USGA at (908) 234-2300, or downloaded from the USGA Web site at www.usga.org. Applicants need to select one of 40 qualifying sites.
Kaua‘i will be hosting a qualifier for the U.S. Women’s Open tournament on May 23 at the Wailua Golf Course with Carol Pratt serving as the official in charge.
The following day, May 24, qualifying for the Women’s Amateur Public Links will be held.
WAPL qualifiers will be held nationwide from May 24 to June 4 with spots awarded at each site to fill the championship field of 156 players.
Following the Wailua Golf Course qualifier, Mary Bea Porter-King will be the official-in-charge at the Plantation Course in Lahaina, Maui for its qualifier on May 31.
The championship format will be two rounds of stroke play with the low 64 scorers advancing to single-elimination match play.
The Women’s Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateur golfers.
First played in 1977, the WAPL has produced such notable winners as Heather Farr, Danielle Ammaccapane, Lori Castillo, Michelle Wie and Kimberly Kim.
