HANAPEPE — Waimea pitcher Andrew Ouderkirk allowed just three hits in 75 pitches, Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium.
That performance led the Menehune to a Saturday sweep over Kapa‘a, 5-0 in Game 2 as the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation opened the 2009 baseball season with a double-header.
Earlier in the day, Waimea shortstop Kalani Fernandez came up with an RBI single to drive home Robert Perreira in the sixth inning as Waimea iced a 14-4 victory that came when the game was called in the sixth inning on the 10-run ruling.
Waimea’s Chris Kaiakapu teamed with Alex Palacio to hold Kapa‘a to just three hits in the opener. Kaiakapu finished with three hits allowed while striking out six, walking three and hitting three batters while Palacio allowed no hits, struck out two and walked none.
Kapa‘a got pitching performances from Brehdan Kamibayashi, the starter, and Aaron Belmonte with the team combining for nine hits allowed while walking five and hitting two batters in soggy, muddy conditions.
Ouderkirk went the distance in Game 2, allowing just three hits while striking out eight, walking none and hitting one batter.
“He pitched below the average,” said Glenn Mickens, the KIF scorekeeper and former coach for the UCLA Bruins. “He threw just 75 pitches. The average is 84 pitches, and he would’ve been in good shape if the game went 10 innings.”
But the game didn’t as Waimea opened up with a run in the second inning when Paul Correa singled and crossed on a Chysen Soares RBI single with two away.
Waimea added another run in the third, two runs in the fourth inning and another in the sixth inning for the win.
Kysen Lopez went the distance for Kapa‘a in the Game 2 loss, getting two earned runs on 10 hits while striking out three and walking three.
With the sweep, the Menehune take a 2-0 lead in the league while Kapa‘a is 0-2.
Kaua‘i High School will host Waimea, Wednesday at Vidinha Stadium starting at 3:30 p.m. while Kapa‘a has the bye until Saturday when the Warriors host Kaua‘i in a double-header at the Ron Martin field.
Anahola Joel Pahukula will be providing live broadcast of the Wednesday game on KQNG Am 570.
