The Kapaa High School boys soccer team upset No. 1 Seabury Hall to advance to the JN Automotive/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association’s Boys Division II State Soccer championship match for the second year in a row.
The Warriors (9-0-1) will now play No. 2 Ka Makani of Hawai‘i Prep Academy (14-3) in the final at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Waipio Soccer Peninsula Park.
Scoreless after regulation and two overtime periods, both teams were forced to decide by penalty shootouts who goes to the main stadium.
For this, the Warriors depended on the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation leading scorer, Ikaika Fuerte. The star forward was first up and easily made his shot. Then he turned right around and stepped into goal. He had been on the field for the whole match and took up the keeper gloves just for the shootout.
Seabury’s player missed his shot, and next up was Caleb Sarsona. Sarsona scored to bring Kapaa up 2-0. Ikaika then blocked the next shot to hold on to the lead.
Kaisen Carrillo padded the lead with his hit. Tension mounted as Seabury hit the next two; Glenn Miguel missed his and Taylor Langstaff’s shot was blocked. Still up, 3-2, Fuerte game up with the much-needed block to send the Warriors into the final.
This is the Warriors’ third consecutive appearance in the tournament and second-straight final appearance since HHSAA’s division split.
Saturday’s game will be broadcast live on OC 16 at 5 p.m.
