PO‘IPU — When Britni Ludington-Braun attacked the barrels, it was indicative of the tight battle between the young riders at the Kaua‘i All Girl Rodeo Association event, Sunday.
Ludington-Braun attacked the barrels with no hesitation, sweeping through the trio of barrels on a 18.010 go at the CJM Country Stables in Po‘ipu.
Earlier, Kelli Carveiro had broken the jinx of “no times” with a blistering 18.393 go, a full second faster than the first five riders, two of which earned “no times” because of a broken pattern and dropped barrels.
Alexis Vasconcelles followed Braun with another quick 18.735 go before the mule smoothed out the arena.
No other grouping could challenge those times and when the dust settled, it was Braun, Carveiro and Vasconcelles in the top three slots of the 1st D Barrels.
That fueled Braun to All-Around Cowgirl honors with 35 points following six events.
Rhonda Kaui teamed with Shantel Wong to top the Team Roping competition with a 28.67/2 average, one of only two teams to place in the event, en route to a three-way tie for Reserve All-Around Cowgirl honors.
Kaui finished in a tie with Kim Medeiros, strong in the Goat Tying event with a 23.869/2 average, almost three seconds faster than second place finisher Braun who stopped the clock with a 26.051/2 average. Kaui was fifth in that event witha 30.175/2 average.
Vasconcelles’ consistent second and third finishes put her in the three-way tie for the Reserve All-Around honors with Kaui and Medeiros.
Vasconcelles was third in the 1st D Barrels, second in the Breakaway Roping with a14.15/2 average and second in the 1st D of Pole Bending with a 22.298 go, just .083 second slower than Braun’s 22.175 go.
Wendy Tannery, nursing an injured wrist, filled in third in the 1st D of Poles with a 22.993 go, .005 second slower than Vasconcelles.
Janine Hashitate finished tops in the Steer Undecorating witha 6.03/2 average, .26 faster than Medeiros’ 6.29/2 average and Kaui’s 7.24/2 average in the event.
Taylor Ludington topped the Breakaway Roping event on a 12.90/2 average over Vasconcelles’ 14.15/2 average.
