KALAHEO — The Kamikaze program flew off the floor with a strong showing in the county’s 13 and Under girls basketball program.
Banking off a game-high 14 points from Riana Ralston, the Kamikaze Red soared to a 38-12 showing for the Z-Girls.
Krystle Henry finished with a game-high 18 points to lead the Kamikaze White to its 34-18 showing over the Kaulupono girls.
Rolling to the chant of “Go Z-girls!” from the stands, the purple-shirted girls under Coach Zabbie attacked the taller Kamikaze Red.
Sean Andrade, coach of the boys U13 Papalina, was enjoying the game with his sons, and said the Z-girls were doing “alright” because they finished in double-digit scoring.
“I was talking with Coach Zabbie before the game, and he was just concerned about being able to score,” Andrade said.
After a scoreless two periods, the Z-girls found the mark as Shayna Sa found the hoop and Monique Lovell went 2-2 from the foul line for four points at the half.
Lovell continued with four points in the second half for a game-total six points. Chazlyn Zablan, Sa and Shenia Zablan each netted pairs.
Following Ralston’s lead, Annie Ballesteros netted eight and Shayanne Almarza added six points. Lele Hanie chipped in four, Sariah Ijima and Casey Arashiro each netted a pair with Kailee Yago and Lele Silva adding a digit apiece.
After being able to score just six points to Kamikaze Red’s 11 points, Kaelyn Aquino-Kamakele brought the crowd to life with a bomb from outside the three-point arc in the third period, the only trey in the contest.
Coach Bobby Kamakele also went to various combinations after working platoon changes in the first half.
That resulted in a strong showing against the Kamikaze White in the final stanza when the Kaulupono defense kept the ball on its side of the court and prevented any Kamikaze score until midway through the period when Kawehi Louis Diamond was able to muster the front end of a charity pair.
Henry’s ability as a point guard sparkled as she set up plays for the younger Kamikaze and only capped the plays after allowing the younger players to attempt shots.
Following Henry’s lead, Louis-Diamond added nine points, Shaylee Huni, Jadelyn Andaya and Nicole Kahawai each paired.
Aquino-Kamakeleand Nicole Palacio led the Kaulupono effort with five points apiece. Casey Anacleto fired four points with Jullynn Ramos and Melia Okura adding pairs.
