KAPA‘A — Kapa’a High School’s girls basketball team held off a high-scoring Kathleen Cadiente to finish the season a perfect 8-0 on Friday night, beating Kaua‘i 50-49 at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
Cadiente, who was the only player of the game to see double digits, hit four 3-pointers to finish with 20 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Kaua‘i (0-8) held the lead briefly in the second quarter but Kapa‘a was able to come back and finish the half up 29-20.
The half was cut just shy of the buzzer due to a player who badly needed assistance. Two girls collided while going up for a rebound and both hit the floor hard. Both coaches agreed to end the half early so that the player hurt could get the proper attention.
Out of the break, Cadiente was able to close the gap on the Warriors.
In the fourth, with about 20 seconds to go, Kira Taylon hit a 3-pointer to get within one at 50-49. But time ran out and Kaua‘i fell just short of getting its first and last win for the girls.
Kapa‘a’s Leihua McCabe finished with nine points, four rebounds and two blocked shots. Jessilyn Artoho-Aki also added nine points and had four rebounds.
Mai’lika Napoleon finished with eight points and five steals. Leina‘ala McCabe had eight points and four rebounds.
Kaua‘i’s Kayla Werner had eight points, only in the first half before having to leave the game.
Kapa‘a’s varsity team now advances to the state championships to be played on O‘ahu. It will be the Lady Warriors’ second consecutive appearance.

Kapa‘a’s junior varsity girls ended their season on a high note, beating Kaua‘i 44-25 on Friday. Kapa‘a was led by Reggie McCabe who finished with 12 points and Krystal Christian who scored 10.
Kaua‘i’s Uila Ahosivi finished with 10 points.
