WAIMEA — The Kapa‘a High School girls basketball team trailed home-team Waimea High School throughout most of the game, but rallied when it counted. The Lady Warriors got just what they needed to tie the game at the half. When they trailed in the third, they entered the fourth quarter aggressively to beat the Lady Menehune 39-38.
Waimea jumped ahead early thanks to a 3-pointer from Jayme Jacinto and four points each from Kia Barba and Erin Connelly to go up 11-6.
Connelly went on to finish with 17 points, four rebounds and three blocks. Barba finished with nine points and five rebounds.
But things turned around when Kapa‘a got a much-needed boost from up-and-comer Mahea Hanie-Grace. The freshman leading scorer for the junior varsity squad had been pulled up to help out the varsity team, and came up real big. Hanie-Grace led the Lady Warriors scorers with 14 points — nine of them coming from the 3-point range — also added five steals, three assists and a block.
Teammate Tori Tuttle finished with 11 points, all but two of them coming in the second half. Jondi Das and Mai’lika Napoleon each had five rebounds apiece.
Junior varsity:
Kapa‘a 35, Waimea 32
The Kapa‘a junior varsity girls had a comeback story of their own on Friday. Playing without Hanie-Grace, they were forced to find ways to score from other players.
They found themselves trailing for the first time all season for at least half the game. It came down to the final minutes and Kapa‘a was able to come out with a 35-32 victory.
Kapa‘a was led by Krystal Christian who finished with 20 points.
