HONOLULU — Rep. John Mizuno (District 30 – Kamehameha Heights, Kalihi Valley, Fort Shafter) yesterday introduced a bill exploring the possibility of bringing the Super Bowl and related activities to the state of Hawai‘i.
HB818 establishes the Hawai‘i Super Bowl Task Force, to be located within the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.
The Task Force would be responsible for developing a plan and coordinating efforts in researching the potential of having the National Football League consider Hawai‘i as a future site of the Super Bowl.
Hawai‘i has hosted the Pro Bowl since 1980. The bill’s authors believe Hawai‘i has elements in place to host an event such as the Super Bowl. Part of the Task Force’s responsibilities will be to determine how Hawai‘i can meet the NFL’s criteria, and report back to the Legislature for the 2010 session.
The bill will be heard in the House Committee on Tourism, Culture and International Affairs, chaired by Rep. Joey Manahan, who is one of the co-signers of the bill.
