KAPA‘A — Team Keala, a Bantam division squad, opened the Kaua‘i Inline Hockey Association spring season with two wins after defeating Team John Red, 7-3 Friday night and edging Team Todd Blue 8-7, Sunday at the Kapa‘a rinks.
Trevor McCracken was one of the headliners for Team Keala, finishing the Friday night outing with a goal and key assists before netting four goals and two assists, Sunday. He also went on to play in several Midget division games.
According to KIHA scorekeeper Penni Taketa, games are scheduled for Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons at the Kapa‘a rink with the exception of this Sunday when everyone takes a break for the National Football League Super Bowl.
There is no admission charge to view the competition that features young skaters in the Squirt division through adults in the Midget division.
Friday
Squirt Green Machine 7, Squirt Red 6
Shannon Sitzler netted two straight goals in the final two minutes of play to pull the Green Machine to its one point advantage.
Sitzler finished the game netting five of the team’s seven points with Kamalu Gandia netting the remaining pair of scores.
Ed Punua had a hat trick to lead the Squirt Red with Josh Lakotas getting two goals and Issac Lakotas finishing with a goal and an assist in the Friday night opener.
Team Keala 7, Team John Red 3 (Bantam)
Matthias Davis had five goals, including one that came in the final 13 ticks to lead Team Keala to a 7-3 win over Team John Red. Trevor McCracken finished with a goal and two assists and Jacob Lewis netted a goal in the win.
After chasing a 5-1 halftime deficit, Team John Red came out to finish with a 2-2 second half with Cydney Sitzler and Kawai Peahu each scoring one and assisting on a score. Austin Taylor had the sole first half score.
Goalkeeper Iki Punua finished with 28 saves on 35 shots for TJR while Daniel Alonzo, goalkeeper for Keala, finished with 37 saves on 40 shots.
Midget Blue 7, Midget Green 3
Mika Givins finished with a hat trick and an assist to lead the Midget Blue to a 7-3 win over Midget Green who got two goals from Trevor McCracken.
Eddie Kane followed with two goals and an assist for the Midget Blue with Brandon Muraoka getting two goals. Mark Wojcinski, Pete Brooks and Mike Goodnight finished with an assist each.
Following McCracken, Zach Rodriguez had a goal with Justin Fujikawa lending an assist.
Midget Green goalkeeper Greg Balmores finished with 28 saves on 35 shots while Soane Latunupulu, tending the net for Midget Blue, had 32 saves on 35 shots.
Sunday
Squirt Green 6, Squirt Red 6
Kamalu Gandia and Shannon Sitzler came up with goals in the final seven minutes of play to pull the Squirt Green to a 6-6 stalemate, as Squirt Red could not net a goal in the final 17 minutes of play.
Gandia finished play with a hat trick for the Squirt Green followed by Sitzler netting two goals and getting two assists. Victor Sanchez rounded out the Squirt Green effort with a goal at the 1:21 mark in the first half.
Eddie Punua finished with four goals in the Squirt Red effort with Luke Boyd adding a pair of nets.
Red goalkeeper Josh Lakotas finished with 22 saves on 28 shots while Chanel Tremblay, working the net for the Green, finished with 27 saves on 33 shots.
Team Keala 8, Team Todd Blue 7
Trevor McCracken finished with five goals, including two straight in the final seven minutes of play, to lead Keala to an 8-7 edge over Team Todd Blue in a physical contest in the Bantam division.
McCracken also added a pair of assists in the Keala win with Matthias Davis netting a hat trick and an assist. Cydney Sitzler finished with two assists.
Jacob Lewis finished with a hat trick and an assist to lead Team Todd Blue followed by Zack Lewis adding a goal and an assist. Kala Yee, Cascade Mayer and Ben Steuri each added a goal in the effort.
Stephanie Steuri, the Team Todd goalkeeper, finished with 32 saves on 40 shots while Daniel Alonzo, the Keala keeper, made 27 saves on 34 shots.
Midget Blue 5, Midget Green 4
Keala Davis had a goal in the final 15 ticks in an effort that came up short, 5-4 against the Midget Blue that scored all of its five goals in the first half.
Davis finished with two goals and an assist for the Midget Green with Trevor McCracken added a goal and two assists. Davis finished with a goal and an assist and Ikaika Fuerte adding a second-half goal.
Brandon Muraoka led the Midget Blue with two goals and an assist. Ed Kawe finished with a goal and an assist. Mike Goodnight and Todd Mayer each netted a goal.
Jaime Pablo, tending goal for the Midget Blue, finished with 21 saves on 25 shots while Soane Latuniupulu, goalkeeper for Midget Green, had 25 saves on 30 shots.
