WAIMEA — Davone Florence led the Red Raiders with 15 points and was 5-of-7 from the free throw line in Kaua‘i’s High School’s 51-41 overtime victory over Waimea High School last night at the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea.
The game was much closer than the final score would reflect.
Prior to the overtime, Waimea trailed by as many as seven, the game was tied four times total and there were four lead changes in two minutes in the third quarter.
Kaua‘i (1-2) was once again without player Kaleo Cummings, but Waimea was also down Siasau Matagiese.
Waimea was still riding high off its Saturday night edge over Kapa‘a and came out against the defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions strong.
Waimea’s leading scorer Malcolm Carter came off the bench — for the second straight game in a row — and tied the game for the first time in the first quarter. By the end of it, the Menehune (2-2) were only down a pair of points, as Florence scored on a last-minute jumper.
Carter was fouled with a second left of the second and was sent to the line to bring the Menehune to within one going into the half.
Waimea was able to get the lead for the first time of the night off a pair from Bransen Agu. Kaua‘i’s Chad Koga got a score in the play immediately following.
With a minute left in the final quarter of regulation, Tino Ramos fouled Carter while shooting a three. At the line, Carter banked all three shots to cut Kaua‘i’s lead to 34-32. Waimea’s Micah Rita came up with a steal and with quick passes to Carter, then Xavier Guirao, the game was tied again.
Waimea wasn’t able to recapture the lead until five seconds left in regulation. Up 36-34, with three seconds left, Kaua‘i’s Austin Simao tied the game sending the teams into a four-minute overtime session.
This is where Kaua‘i broke out and where Waimea broke down. Waimea had three turnovers that resulted in Kaua‘i points. At one time, Kaua‘i enjoyed a 12-point lead.
Teila Huni finished the night with 13 points and nine rebounds. Koga and Simao finished with eight apiece.
Waimea’s Carter led all scorers with 20 points and was 8-of-10 from the free throw line.
Guirao added eight points. Sean Inouye finished with five rebounds.
