WAIMEA — Waimea’s Kia Barba had 13 points, four rebounds and was 5-of-8 from the free throw line to lead the Lady Menehune to their second victory over the Lady Red Raiders of Kaua‘i High School last night at the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea.
Their 41-29 victory was also the Lady Menehune’s second double-digit win over The Raiders.
Both teams had a slow start with no player scoring within the first two minutes of the game. The slump was finally broken by a lay-up from Kaua‘i’s Janessa Grady. But that would turn out to be the only set of points the Raiders would get in that quarter as Waimea picked up its pace and finished it out 11-2.
Waimea built on its lead and jumped up to 16-4 with a 3-pointer from Jayme Jacinto.
Kaua‘i was dangerously close to being held to the single digits heading into the half, but Jori Jasper scored off a pass from Kayla Warner to close out the opening half at 19-10.
Kaua‘i attempted to keep it closer in the third quarter and scored seven points in that frame to Waimea’s nine.
The Raiders, and Kelsey Cadiente then started the fourth quarter on a scoring spree, scoring six unanswered points, cutting down the lead to five points at 28-23. Cadiente scored from the field and banked a pair from the free throw line. But that was all the Menehune needed for a comeback. Coach Elton Montemayor called a time-out and as soon as the girls came out of the break, they built that lead back up to 10 and didn’t stop.
Barba broke the Menehune’s scoring slump, followed by another 3-pointer from Jacinto.
Jacinto finished with seven points and three rebounds. Vakeesha Lagazo and sisters Erin and Mollie Connelly all finished with four points each.
Jasper, Cadiente and Grady all finished with six points each. Jasper also posted four rebounds. Werner, a former Waimea player, was big presence on the inside with eight rebounds and four blocks.
Kaua‘i’s main problems were rebounding and the inability to bank shots. Kaua‘i had a total 19 rebounds to Waimea’s 24 and Kaua‘i had the shots but just couldn’t score off of them.
Junior varsity:
Waimea 40, Kaua‘i 21
In the earlier, junior varsity game, Robin Moura led the Lady Menehune with eight points en route to Waimea’s 40-21 win over Kaua‘i.
Waimea was up 24-6 at the half. Kaua‘i was able to overcome that by scoring more points in the third quarter (nine) than they did in the previous two, but they still had a long way to go.
Waimea’s Sanida Pahelehua and Cheyanne Duarte both finished with seven points each. Shayna Alop added six.
Kaua‘i’s Uila Ahosivi led the Raiders with 15 points — 13 of which came in the second half. Jasmine Mariana scored four.
