Varsity: Kapa‘a 53, Waimea 40 – WAIMEA — Kekoa Colipano scored 12 points in Kapa‘a High School’s 53-40 victory over Waimea High School in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation’s boy’s basketball season opener last night at the Clem Gomes Gym.
Teammates Kekoa Prem added eight points and two rebounds, Sean Shigematsu finished with seven points, four rebounds and two blocks and Duke Pauli finished with seven points, four rebounds and one block.
Jin Wu finished with six points, five rebounds and a block.
Both teams had a relatively slow start. Kapa‘a scored only seven first-quarter points; Waimea scored 5.
Waimea’s biggest problem early on was the turnovers. In the first quarter, the Menehune committed three, but still trailed by two. They would go on to finish with 12 turnovers by the end of the game.
Waimea was able to overcome its mishaps in the second quarter and got its first lead of the night when Malcolm Carter sunk a three-pointer to bring the Menehune up 13-12. Kapa‘a fired right back scoring back-to-back scores to reclaim that lead.
Kapa‘a would go up 27-20 by the half.
Kapa‘a’s Warriors combined for 24 rebounds and five blocks. Waimea also had 24 rebounds and two blocks.
Leading the Menehune was Malcolm Carter who scored 10 of their 20 first-half points and finished the night with 23 points — which included two three-pointers late in the game — four rebounds and two blocks. V.J. Carino and Micah Rita both had four rebounds apiece.
The Warriors enjoyed a 14-point lead in the fourth en route to their first regular season win.
Junior Varsity:
Kapa‘a 35, Waimea 34
At 14-13 in Kapa‘a’s favor, with seconds to go before the half, Waimea’s K. Perreira-Alquiza was fouled and sent to line for a chance to give the Menehune the lead. He sunk his first one for the tie, but missed the second to put the two teams in a tie.
Waimea finally got the lead it wanted with 45 seconds left of the third quarter, but fell again late.
The two teams would tie again at 31-31 by the end of regulation, forcing a four-minute overtime in. Kea Nacolatabud scored two overtime field goals to lift Kapa‘a to a 35-34 win. They were his only two points of the night and they came at a good time for his team.
The Warriors were Jundell Sagucio and Kainoa Colipano who both finished with eight points apiece.Bradley Coloma who had seven points.
The Waimea and Kapa‘a girls teams meet tonight also in Waimea.
