All of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation soccer matches, both official and exhibition, were cancelled yesterday due to extreme weather conditions and the potential hazards they may have put the athletes and coaches in.
Kaua‘i High School athletic director Ross Shimabukuro said he made the call to cancel the Red Raider matches against the Waimea High School Menehune at approximately 6 a.m. yesterday so that Waimea had enough time to cancel its transportation plans.
Several hours later, Island School’s Sean Maguon called of its exhibition match against the Kapa‘a High School’s junior varsity Warrior soccer team.
A tornado warning was also issued yesterday afternoon with it expecting to hit the island around the original start times of the varsity games.
There were no immediate plans made to reschedule the games.
According to Shimabukuro, the Kaua‘i/Waimea game will not be rescheduled unless it has bearing on determining the KIF champion at the end of the season.
Island School is competing in boys soccer in exhibition for the first time in school history.
The Voyagers won their first match of the season 2-1, on Thursday, against Kaua‘i. Pierce Murphy and Michael Chamberlain scored for the Voyagers. Blaise Ferguson scored the lone goal for the Raiders in the 57th minute of the game.
