‘Ohana Christian Fellowship celebrated its 10-year anniversary last month at Wailua Marina Restaurant.
The event was well attended by fellowship members. Testimonies were shared, worshipful hula and music and a historical video presentation were among the festivities.
The 10th anniversary celebration culminated with a prayer and blessing over Pastor Matt and his family and over the future of ‘Ohana Christian Fellowship by Pastor Roy “Rocky” Sasaki.
‘Ohana Christian Fellowship started in the summer of 1998 with a vision by Pastor Matt Victor to build a church that would impact the Eastside. After doing some demographic studies, it became clear that Kapa‘a was the place to start the church.
A group of 12 adults met to get a vision for what kind of church ‘Ohana Christian Fellowship would be. During that first summer, Victor visited many homes in the Kapa‘a and Wailua area. Some of the what he learned helped shape the fellowship’s vision and purpose.
‘Ohana’s first official worship service was held on Aug. 28, 1998, at the Kapa‘a Middle School cafeteria. Using what money they had and credit cards, 6,000 flyers announcing the grand opening were mailed to homes from Wailua to Kilauea.
With rented sound equipment, ‘Ohana’s first worship service had 69 people in attendance. Ten years later and the group still worships from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sundays at the Kapa‘a Middle School cafeteria and has more than doubled in size. Children, youth and adult classes are also available.
