Kaua‘i’s Levi Miyashiro edged out in playoff

PO‘IPU — Bradley Shigezawa and Cyd Okino came out of the wind with a spot in this year’s Ulupalakua Ranch Tournament of Champions.

The Honolulu pair of junior golfers emerged from a sudden-death playoff hole with a par while challengers Levi Miyashiro of Kapa‘a and Cassy Isagawa of Wailuku, Maui, finished the playoff hole with a bogey.

Both teams were tied at 68 following the opening round of the Hawai‘i State Junior Golf Association Mixed Team tournament which was played Saturday at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course.

Working through a second day of windy conditions, the two teams battled through the par 72 course, playing 6,499 yards for the boys and 6,023 yards for the girls.

Yesterday, the format was played using the Foursome Stroke Play format with each member of the boy-girl team alternating shots.

The leading teams battled head-to-head throughout the day, finishing with even par rounds to force the sudden-death playoff on the par 3, No. 17 hole where the Shigezawa-Okino team picked up the win on a par.

With the win, the team will play at the HSJGA Ulupalakua Ranch Tournament of Champions tournament which will be played at the Wailea Golf Club on Maui, Dec. 6-7.

The Mixed Team tournament was designed to help prepare Hawai‘i HSJGA memmbers compete in a similar Ryder Cup format being played against the top junior golfers from Japan in a tournament later this year, states a HSJGA press release.

That tournament, the 2nd Annual USA Hawai‘i-Japan Junior Cup, will be played Nov. 14-19 at the Waikoloa Beach Resort-Kings Course on the Big Island.

It will feature the state’s top 12 boys from the 15-18 age division and the top eight girls from the 13-18 age division.

The Hawai‘i golfers will be playing against Japan’s equivalent golfers.
