Rookie Jordon Dizon and the rest of the Detroit Lions kick off their official football season today against the Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome.
Dizon had a successful preseason at the linebacker, but this will be his first game as an official Lion since making the team last week.
Dizon was a second-round draft pick for Detroit and was signed to a four-year deal in the summer, but the official game roster was not finalized until last week when head coach Rod Marinelli cut down the roster to 53.
At his final post-practice media session before the today’s game, Marinelli said he had a good idea which linemen he would play today, but didn’t disclose the lineup.
“(It’s) the whole team. I think it’s just really important because really if (a player goes), ‘Wow, I’m not playing,’ all of a sudden that edge goes,” he said Friday. “They might not be looking in their book or those things and you make your announcements in the morning with them, and then, again, (if) all of a sudden a guy wakes up with the flu on Sunday, he can’t play. That guy hopefully is prepared all the way.”
Dizon, a Waimea High School graduate, is currently listed behind Paris Lenon on the depth chart at the middle linebacker position.
The Lions were 7-9 last year, and 2-6 on the road, despite having a perfect preseason.
They were 4-0 again in this year’s preseason.
