PO‘IPU — A young veteran on the surfing scene and a newcomer pulled double victories over the weekend at the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s season opener at Prince Kuhio’s, otherwise known as PK’s.
With conditions coming in at 2- to 4-foot wave faces, veteran Kyle Galtes won the Open Men’s Division and the Explorer Juniors and rookie James Thesken made his mark for the start of the tour with double victories in the Open Boys and Explorer Menehune divisions.
Other winners for the day were Dylan Goodale who won the Explorer Men’s division, and Kaimana Jacquias won the Open Juniors.
For the girls, Leila Hurst who won the Open Women’s division, Brianna Cope won the Explorer Women’s and Tatiana Weston-Webb won the Explorer Girls.
Many of the surfers competed in multiple divisions throughout the day which resulted in several top six finishes.
A new NSSA Hawai‘i format was introduced and put into place. Under the new format surfers are only permittted to compete in contests from their resident islands.
The competition schedule has not yet been posted on the NSSA Hawai‘i Web site, but should be up as the season continues. For full contest results, see today’s Scoreboard on opposite page.
