Albert Lum

Albert Yuk Chong Lum died June 28, 2008, in Kilauea at the age of 85. Born June 15, 1923, in Manoa, O‘ahu, he retired from Hawaiian Electric Company as a control operator at the Kahe Power Plant.

He was preceded in death by parents Sing Hoy Lum and Lee Shee Lum; son Barney; and brothers Harry, Eddie and George Lum.

He is survived by wife Verdelle Peters Lum; sons Bruce Lum (Sharlene Chun-Lum) and Brent (Deborah) Lum; daughter Jade Haunani (Gary) Pacheco; brothers David and Gilbert Lum of Honolulu; sisters Arlene Lum and Thelma (Wai Kong) Wong of Honolulu and Clarice Lagrimas; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.

Friends may visit with the family from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, at Wai‘oli Hu‘ia Church. Service begins at 10:30 a.m. Visitors may bring a lei in the service for the tree of remembrance.

Emilia Villanueva

Emilia Balanay Villanueva of Hanama‘ulu died June 28, 2008, at Straub Clinic & Hospital at the age of 74. Born Aug. 3, 1933, in Vintar, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, she was retired from Kauai Surf and Westin Kauai as a housekeeper.

She is preceded in death by husband Dionicio Villanueva.

She is survived by son Philip (Marlene) Villanueva and daughter Nellie (Leo) Bunao, both of Kapa‘a; sister Primitiva Agpaoa of the Philippines; grandchildren Ryan of Las Vegas, Tyler, Danielle and Bradley of Kapa‘a; and numerous relatives, nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held, beginning with viewing from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Friday, July 11, at Immaculate Conception Church. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.

Joseph Freitas Sr.

Joseph Freitas Sr. of Kalaheo died July 6, 2008, at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital at the age of 85. Born September 10, 1922, in Lawa‘i, he was a truck driver with McBryde Plantation.

He was preceded in death by son Rodney Freitas and daughter Loretta Freitas Troyer.

He is survived by wife Frances Freitas; sons Michael (Sharon) Freitas and Joey Freitas, both of Kalaheo; daughters Bernie Soto of Hanapepe, Miss Frannie (Dickie) Silva of Kalaheo and Laurie (Wesley) Chow of Kalaheo; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister Minnie Soto of ‘Oma‘o; sisters-in-law Margaret Freitas, Minnie Freitas and Emma Freitas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit with the family from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, at Holy Cross Church; Mass at 1:30 p.m. followed by burial at Kauai Memorial Gardens. Casual attire is suggested.

Gene Schumacher

Gene Leebert Schumacher of Lihu‘e died July 4, 2008, at home at the age of 53. He was born June 14, 1955, in Lihu‘e.

He was preceded in death by father Carl W. Schumacher Jr.

He is survived by spouse DeLee Halia Beaudry, mother Ululani J. Schumacher, brothers Carl W. (Annie) Schumacher III and Jeffery H. Schumacher, nephew Kyle Adam Schumacher, numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, at the Lihue Lutheran Church; service at 11 a.m. Casual attire is suggested and the family requests that flowers be omitted.

Eugenio Macugay

Eugenio Dela Cruz Macugay Sr. of Wailua died May 5, 2008, at Queens Medical Center at the age of 76. Born Nov. 15, 1931, in Laoag, Philippines, he was employed at Lihue Plantation.

He was preceded in death by parents Maximo and Valeriana Macugay, stepmother Purificacion Macugay, brothers Rodrigo Macugay and Ricardo Macugay, and mother-in-law Catalina Ramos.

He is survived by wife Herminia Ramos Macugay of Wailua; children Elena (Ernesto) Vidad of the Philippines, Eddie (Myrna) Macugay of Maui, Marisa Valdez of Hanama‘ulu, Peter (Femar) of Kapa‘a, Eugenio (Mel) Macugay Jr. of Las Vegas, Danny (Jackie) Macugay of Wailua, Joel (Dawn) of Washington, Mark Macugay of Abu Dhabi; father-in-law Ulpiano Ramos of the Philippines; brothers Nabigio (Amparo, deceased) Macugay; sisters Esperanza (Casamiro) Tumaneng of the Philippines, Pacita (Anatalio, deceased) Ramos of the Philippines; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, at Borthwick Mortuary Chapel in Koloa and again from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Friday, July 18, at St. Catherine’s Church in Kapa‘a. Anjanette Duyanen

Anjanette Paulina Jean Duyanen of Hanama‘ulu died June 26, 2008, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 4. She was born Oct. 17, 2003, in Lihu‘e.

She was preceded in death by family members Melchor Duyanen, Argonia Duyanen, Joaquina “Jean” Eulalio, Leoncio Eulalio, Leonerdo Tomboe, Johnetta Quel and Stephen Palla-Quel.

She is survived by parents Roldan and Cassity Quel Duyanen; sister Angelica Duyanen; grandparents Pacifico and Clementine Quel, and Antonio and Elvira Duyanen; great-grandparents Louis and Felicidad Quel, Paulina Alambra and Valeris Duyanen; and numerous aunties, uncles and cousins.

Deysha Machado

Deysha Kawaileia Machado died July 1, 2008, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. She was born July 1, 2008.

She is survived by parents Devin and Natasha Machado; grandparents Raynard and Esther Machado, and Philip and Marlene Eliana Jr.; great-grandparents Contrado and Helena Acierto, Lei Machado, Mauro Valvieja and Philip Eliana Sr.; and numerous aunties, uncles and cousins.

Basilio Cambon of Koloa died July 1, 2008, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 99. Born Feb. 25, 1909, in the Philippines, he was a laborer for Grove Farm.

He is survived by children Leonida Mendez of the Philippines, Christina (Florentino) Miranda of California, Consolacion Sy of California, Lourdes (Wilfredo) Rabena of Koloa, Magdalena Gambon of California and Virginia (Alex) Quintin of Nevada; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Friends may visit with the family from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, at St. Raphaels Church in Koloa; Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens. Casual attire is suggested.

Tadao Sunada

Tadao Sunada of Hanalei died June 29, 2008, at his residence at the age of 84. Born April 7, 1924, in Ko‘olau, Hawai‘i, he was a taro farmer and truck driver with Kobayashi Construction.

He is survived by sister-in-law Mabel Sunada of Kilauea, and numerous aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit with the family from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, at the Kapaa Hongwanji Mission; service at 4 p.m. Casual attire is suggested.

Donald Kanahele

Donald Hiilani Kanahele of Ni‘ihau died on July 4, 2008, on Kaua‘i. Born June 8, 1932, in Ni‘ihau, he was a ranch hand with Niihau Ranch.

He was preceded in death by son Donald Hanelani Kanahele.

He is survived by wife Annie Kanahele; sons Kelmar Hiilani Kanahele of Hilo and Joseph Keoua (MaryAnn) Kanahele of Koloa; daughters Anna (Dana) Kaohelaulii of Makaweli, Ida (Gordon) Kaaumoana of Ni‘ihau, Diane (Oliwa) Kanahele of Kekaha, Annie (George) Kanahele of Ni‘ihau and Ehu (Isaac) Kanahele of Kekaha; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother Leonard Kanahele Sr. of Hanapepe; sisters Kaleimomi (Albert) Schmitz and Mikala Woodruff both of Kekaha; and hanai sister Hoonani Shintani of Kekaha.

Friends may visit with the family at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, at Garden Island Mortuary chapel; service at 2 p.m. Burial to follow at Kekaha Hawaiian Cemetery.

Evelyn Matsuda

Evelyn Tamayo Matsuda of Kapa‘a died June 28, 2008, at her home at the age of 87. Born Oct. 26, 1920, in Kaua‘i, she was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by husband Wallace Matsuda.

She is survived by children Robert (Tai) Matsuda, Hubert (Bernie) Matsuda, Colleen Matsuda, Priscilla (Clifford) Couey and Feodor (Wanda) Matsuda; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Private services were held.

Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Matsuda family with arrangements.


Laura Hiura

Laura M. Hiura of Mililani, Hawai‘i, died June 21, 2008, at Wahiawa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at the age of 93. Born Aug. 4, 1914, in Lihu‘e, she was the owner of Laura’s clothing store.

She is survived by son Al Hiura; daughter Jerri Fujii; sisters Lillian Takiguchi, Violet Seu and Mitsuko Kawaoka; and five grandchildren.

Services were private.

Basilia Corrales

Basilia Cabais Cabalteja Corrales of Hanama‘ulu died July 2, 2008, at her home at the age of 89. Born on Jan. 10, 1919, in Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, she was retired from Wilcox Memorial Hospital.

She is survived by son Rudy (Medina) Cabalteja of Hanama‘ulu; daughter Rose (Tom) Cabalteja-Hedeen of O‘ahu; brother Vicente Cabais of the Philippines; grandchildren Marlene (Bill) McLaughlin of Hanapepe, Felina (Chito) Garduque of Kapa‘a and Bryson Cabalteja of Hanama‘ulu; nieces Caroline Cacatian-Mapue of Hanama‘ulu and Rosalinda Cabais of Kapa‘a; stepchildren Pacio Corrales, Domy Romero and Lori; great-grandchildren Chino Cabalteja of Kapa‘a, Katherine and Cristina McLaughlin of Hanapepe; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m during a celebration of her life on Friday, July 25, at The Way of Salvation Church in Kapa‘a; services begin at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.

Constancio Suniga

Constancio Balisacan Suniga Sr. of Kapa‘a died July 5, 2008, at home at the age of 82. Born July 12, 1925, in Claveria, Cagayan, Philippines, he was retired from Lihue Sugar Plantation as an irrigator.

He is survived by wife Elena; sons Constancio (Corazon) Suniga Jr., Rudy (Liza) Suniga, Dionicio (Lisa) Suniga of Kapa‘a, Romeo (Clarita) Suniga of Hanama‘ulu, Billy (Barbara) Suniga of Alaska; daughters Betty (Rolly) Fernandez of Kapa‘a, Leah (Rico) Cabaya of Hilo and Tess (Rolly) Ortal of O‘ahu; 23 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit with the family from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, July 17, during a celebration of his life at Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall; services begin at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens.

Frank Parraga Jr. of Kalaheo died July 6, 2008, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 79. Born May 28, 1929, in Koloa, he was a field laborer for McBryde Sugar Plantation.

He is survived by wife Agar Parraga of Kalaheo; sisters Helen Machado of Koloa, Sophie (Philip) Bonilla of Kalaheo and Lillian (Manuel) Vasques of Kapa‘a; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may visit the family from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. on Friday, July 11, at Borthwick Kauai Mortuary Chapel in Koloa; services will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial to follow at Kauai Veterans Cemetery in Hanapepe. Casual attire is suggested.
