MANA — A dragster sustained heavy damage and its driver required medical attention after a crash at the Mana Raceway Park last night, according to eyewitnesses.
Dale Schumard, junior dragster crew chief, said the driver was doing a time trial around 4:30 or 5 p.m. when something went awry. He said he saw the vehicle break in pieces just before the engine.
“He had a good run down the track, the chute deployed, but the next thing people were calling for the ambulance,” Schumard said.
Geoff LaBombard, a Junior Dragster driver who was at the track, forfeited racing Saturday night and instead opted to do a prayer run to open the night’s racing schedule.
The accident marred the second of two nights of racing hosted by the Garden Island Racing Association at the Westside raceway.
Waimea Fire Station confirmed it responded to the accident, but Kaua‘i County officials could not provide further information on the status of the driver before press time.
