Hideko Inagaki
Hideko Inagaki of Lihu‘e passed away on April 15, 2008, at the age of 85. Born on Oct. 24, 1922, in Wahiawa, she retired from the staff of Sen. Spark Matsunaga (deceased).
She is survived by husband Larry Inagaki; daughters Lynne Machado, Michelle Looser, Royann Luttner; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother Himeo Iwata.
Inurnment will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary Ltd.
Tamotsu Tokushige
Tamotsu Tokushige of Waimea passed away on April 13, 2008, at Hale Kupuna Heritage Home at the age of 79. Born on Oct. 1, 1928, in ‘Ele‘ele, he was a custodian with the state of Hawai‘i, Department of Education.
He is survived by brother Koichi H. (Doris) Tokushige of Honolulu; sisters Asae T. Kawamura, Misae (Kazuo) Takanishi, Mutsue (Akira) Ogata, all of Honolulu, and Gladys K. Okada of Lihu‘e; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were private.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary Ltd.
Mary Pinho
Mary G. Pinho, formerly of Hana, Maui, passed away on April 1, 2008, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at the age of 97.
She enjoyed a variety of careers including chief operator for Hawaiian Telephone at the Kula and Hana exchanges for 25 years; ticket agent for Hawaiian Airlines; and assistant chief cook for Hotel Hana Maui.
During World War II, she volunteered as a leader of the Red Cross Recovery Team in Hana.
She later arranged the weekly tropical flowers at Hotel Hana Maui, served as a substitute teacher at Hana School, was a caretaker and part-time chef for estate homes and properties, and in her later years, with the founder, she became the first curator for the Hana Cultural Center. Pinho also served a term on the Maui County Water Board and for several years she served as the president of the Hana Community Association.
In the early ‘50s, she owned and operated Kauakea Kottages in Wakiu where she shared her special brand of Aloha until it sold in 1975.
She most enjoyed being a member of the Na Leo O Hana Choral Group.
A great cook, Mary was known for hosting the finest hekka and Portuguese soup dinners, those being among everyone’s favorites.
Following her first stroke in 1993, Mary moved to Kaua‘i to live with her daughter, Maryanne, and her husband, Charles Kusaka, where she enjoyed making new friends and sharing old-time stories.
She was preceded in death by husband George “Keoki”; their infant son Donald George; and granddaughter Christina.
She is survived by daughters Maryanne (Charles) Kusaka of Wailua, Kehaulani (Robert) Quartero of Honolulu; sons Kirtley (Minna) Pinho and Glenn Pinho, both of Majuro, Marshall Islands; 16 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother Gordon (Aileen) Cockett of Lahaina; sister Winona Amorin of Wailuka; favorite niece Dede (Jack) Wilhelm of Lihu‘e; several nieces and nephews across the state; and her many loving friends on Kaua‘i and in Hana, Maui.
Prayer service was held in early April at St. Catherine’s Church in Kapa‘a. Funeral service and internment will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Puuiki, Hana, Maui in mid-May.
Borthwick Kauai Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements.
Yasuko Sugawara
Yasuko K. Sugawara of Waimea died on April 8, 2008, at Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital at the age of 89. Born on Dec. 18, 1918, in Koloa, she was a nurse for Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by husband Takeo Sugawara; and parents Hiyakuman and Hatsuyo Kimura.
She is survived by sons Dr. Alan Sugawara and Wayne Sugawara; daughters Carolyn (Lyle) Martell and Lyndell (Dale) Erdmann; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held on April 18, 2008, at Waimea Foreign Church. Inurnment followed the services at the church cemetery.
