KALAHEO — A breakaway play late in the game and a rebound possession gave the Choppers a 24-22 edge over the Warriors as Kaulupono Basketball and the county of Kaua‘i unveiled the Extreme Termite league before an appreciative audience, Tuesday night, at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Earlier in the evening, Papalina was a 26-9 winner over Waimea, and in the nightcap, Chavis Garma finished with 9 points to lead Waimea to a 27-13 showing over Kalaheo.
Bobby Kamakele, one of the Kaulupono leaders, said there are three age divisions in the termite program which start at age 5.
The Mitey Mites, which are the 5 and 6 year olds, have nine teams while the Termite group, the 7 and 8 year olds, has eight teams. The Extreme Termites, which are the 9 year olds and above, has a total of eight teams, Kamakele said. In total, the program encompasses about 250 players in all the age groups from Lihu‘e to Kekaha.
Games for the Mitey Mites and Termites are played on Saturdays at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center with the first tipoffs scheduled for Apr. 19 and continuing each Saturday through May 24.
The Extreme Termite league started play Tuesday night with games being played on Tuesday and Thursday nights through May 8.
Game format for the Extreme Termites is four periods of 6-minute stop time, and three games played each night starting at 5:30 p.m.
There is no charge to view the competition.
Kai Lewis led the charge for Papalina in the first contest with a game-high 10 points followed by Curren Dillberg finishing with 6 points in the victory. Keileb Alborado-Planas, Jenson Hanohano, Teremiah Sanchez and Noah Sagil each netted a pair.
Zechariah Portny, Alyssa Pigao, Brandon Ijima and Keahi Kanahele, each netting pairs, led the Waimea effort with Samantha Nichols adding a digit.
Marissa Bautista paced the Choppers’ win with 10 points followed by Tita Apilado’s 4 points.
Kelii Mcos finished with 10 points, including 8 points in the second quarter which forced an 8-8 halftime stalemate. Travis Ornellas and Krystopher Mcos each added 4 points for the Warriors.
Briggs Agu paced the Westside victory with 12 points, including a bomb from outside the 3-point arc in the third quarter followed by Garma finishing with 9 points. Charlie Roloago added 5 points and a pair from Joayson Cudanes rounded out the victory.
Jassem Cumlot paced the Kalaheo effort with 9 points including an opening trey followed by Kamea Palama-Alquiza adding 4 points.
