Kapa‘a High School’s girls softball team ended Round 1 of Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation play on a high note, Wednesday afternoon, as they scored two runs in the seventh inning to defeat Waimea High School 5-4 at Waimea Canyon Park
Both teams went scoreless until the third inning when Kapa‘a was able to bring in a runner. At the bottom of the inning, Waimea answered back with the tying run and gained the advantage by scoring another in the fourth.
Kapa‘a’s Melina Obar was the winning pitcher of the afternoon, going all seven innings allowing six hits and striking out three.
Waimea’s Shawna Tafiti, although tagged with the loss, allowed only five hits and also struck out three. Offensively, Tafiti delivered a home run for the Menehune and scored once.
Marie-Beth Watanabe went 1-for-2, Erin Connelly finished 1-for-4 and scored a run and Tauina Tafiti went 1-for-1 and scored a run.
For the Lady Warriors, Jocelyn Enrique finished 2-for-4, with a double and two RBI and scored once.
Leilani Laranio went hitless but scored twice. She was walked once and got on base by an error. Lokelani Manaku went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Larae Ho‘opii went 1-for-2 and scored once.
There are no games scheduled for tomorrow as the teams will enjoy a week off.
The weekend was reserved for playoff games, but as the Red Raiders of Kaua‘i High School clinched Round 1 last week, no playoff will be needed.
Play will resume starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 12 at the Kapa‘a Ball Park when Kapa‘a hosts the defending KIF champions.
