Kaua‘i High School senior Andrew Renaud narrowly edged out his teammate Canaan Bernard in the Boys 100 Meter Dash and breezed passed his competition in the Boys 200 Meter dash at the Rotary Track and Field Meet yesterday at Vidinha Stadium.
Renaud won both those events, recording a time of 11.53 in the Boys 100 Meter and 23.27 in the Boys 200 Meter dashes. Bernard finished the early event right behind Renaud with a time of 11.58 but finished third in the 200 meters behind Renaud and Waimea High School’s Jayrald Watanabe.
Kaua‘i’s boys and girls then ended the night with a big win at the meet. The boys won with 188 points over Waimea (114), Kapa‘a High School (93) and Island School (4). The girls topped the points chart at 157 points with Waimea coming in at a close 143 points. Kapa‘a finished with 66.
Brycen Phillips turned heads yesterday as he emerged with top-three finishes in two events. The Kula School student, who ran unattached to a team for the meet, won his heat in the Boys 400 Meter Dash, second overall, with a time of 58.17 and finished third in the Boys 800 Meter Run with a time of 2:23.64.
Friend and fellow Kula School student Pierce Murphy made his second appearance at a track and field meet this season and won the Boys 1,500 Meter Run. He and Waimea’s Jared Coleman-Stark battled it out, down to the last lap.
Coleman-Stark held a slight lead throughout until Murphy started his sprint at the final 300 meters to take a commanding lead. Murphy finished with a time of 4:54.55. Coleman-Stark came in at 4:58.75.
Murphy and Coleman-Stark came in at No. 1 and 2 again in the Boys 3,000 Meter run in that same order. Pierce finished in 10:13.68 over Coleman-Stark’s 11:06.91.
Coleman-Stark did bring home a win, though, finishing first in the Boys 800 Meter Run.
On the girls side, Kaua‘i’s Tiffany Ikeda-Simao won her usual events. She took the Girls 100 Meter Dash at 12.71 over teammate Kathleen Cadiente who clocked in at 13:31.
Ikeda-Simao the won the Girls Long Jump with 17 feet, 6 inches.
Waimea’s Caralyn Broyles proved her endurance skills in the mid- to long-distance races yesterday, winning the Girls 800, 1,500 and 3,000 meter runs.
The next Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation qualifying track meet is scheduled for 4 p.m., Friday, at Vidinha Stadium.
