Waimea 3, Kapa‘a 2 – KAPA‘A — Keelan Sakuda posted a career-high 19 kills last night as Waimea High School’s boys volleyball team held off Kapa‘a High School, winning in five sets, 20-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23 and 15-11.
Kapa‘a won the first set with star hitter Chance Bukoski returning to the lineup. Waimea trailed toward the end of the set, but rallied to get within two. But Kapa‘a’s Devin Saiki connected with Kila Youn for the winning kill.
Waimea won the second set and got up to a five-point lead with a double block from Sakuda and Kalani Apilado. Despite a strong offensive attack from Bukoski, Kapa‘a was unable to catch Waimea.
In the third, Waimea jumped to the lead again, but as soon as they hit the final stretch, Kapa‘a rallied scored six unanswered points to overcome its deficit and take the lead at 21-20. The Warriors won the set sending the match to a fourth set.
This time it was the Warriors who jumped to the early lead. But Apilado, who had been playing solid defense throughout the night, took a more active role on the offensive side and came up with major kills to help the Menehune (2-0) win the match.
Sakuda finished with 19 kills and was half of eight blocks. Matsumoto finished with 29 assists, two aces and two kills. Apilado had six blocks and three kills.
Quinn Gonsalves, who left the game in the fourth set due to injury, finished with eight kills.
For Kapa‘a, Bukoski finished with 16 kills and four aces. Setter Devin Saiki posted 37 assists. Youn finished with 12 kills and six blocks. John Berales finished with nine kills.
Kapa‘a (1-1) hosts Kaua‘i High School (1-1) starting at 5 p.m. (junior varsity) and 6:30 p.m. (varsity) on Saturday at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
