PO‘IPU — Matches were not the only victims of the spring break at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation tennis program Saturday.
Sporadic downpours plagued the matches between Waimea and Kapa‘a high schools, and the absence of Kapa‘a’s top seeded boys and girls singles players didn’t help as Waimea swept both divisions, 5-0, 5-0.
“We had so many rain delays that we didn’t finish until 4:30 p.m.,” said Waimea coach Paulette Lum in her e-mail with the Saturday results.
Matches started under the threat of rain, and when the clouds opened up, players scurried for cover at the Kiahuna Tennis and Swim Club Saturday.
One of those matches involved the Boys First Singles when Waimea’s No. 1 Boys player Harold Shimono blasted ball after ball back to Kapa‘a’s Kilakila Youn through the squall.
Shimono kept eyeing the fenceline looking for relief from the rain made even more miserable by the blustery winds that accompanied the squall.
That didn’t appear to affect the Waimea player as Shimono went on to down Youn, 6-2, 6-2.
Darrel Nonaka continued the sweep in the Boys Second Singles by defeating Kapa‘a’s Steven Pascual 6-1, 6-3.
Jordan Sato teamed with Michael Haack to defeat the Warrior team of Dusti Valdez and Jacque Amo, 6-2, 7-5 in the Boys First Doubles.
Tighter matches prevailed in the Boys Second and Third Doubles as Randy Umetsu and Joshua Ponting prevailed over Ador Lopez and Thomas Gausepohl, 7-5, 6-3 in the Boys Second Doubles.
Kevin Toma and Bryle Rivera matched that score in the Boys Third Doubles by getting past Kapa‘a’s Anthony Lopez and Patrick Tran, 7-5, 6-3.
Candice Klein controlled the Girls First Singles by defeating Kapa‘a’s Kirsten McCracken, 6-3, 6-0.
Miyu Adachi, playing for the Menehune in the Girls Second Singles, held the edge over Alexsis Valdez, 7-6, 6-4.
Tiffany Lum and Jade Cano was one of the Waimea teams that had its matches interrupted by the passage of a rain squall.
But that did not deter the Girls First Doubles team which rebounded to defeat the Kapa‘a team of Cherine Ito and Tori Yatogo in three, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Ceci Sun and Beverly Grande topped the Girls Second Doubles with a 6-1, 6-4 win over the Kapa‘a team of Jazzerie Taeza and Naomi Taylor, and the Menehune team of LeeAnn Sagucio and Dessa Rentrop were 6-1, 6-1 winners over Kapa‘a’s Sierra Mayer and Angela Mones in the Girls Third Doubles.
The match between Kaua‘i High School and Island School was re-scheduled to April 2 at the Kaua‘i Community College tennis courts through mutual agreement, said Kaua‘i coach Kristen Fuchigami in an e-mail advisory.
Game time for that match is at 2:30 p.m.
The next scheduled match for KIF Tennis is April 5 when Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a meet at the Kiahuna Tennis and Swim Club.
Island School will travel to the Waimea High School courts to play the Menehune that same day.
Both matches are scheduled to start at noon.
