Trent Allianic held Waimea bats to six hits, Andrew Renaud marked three RBI, and Jordan Leanio finished with a hit and an RBI to lead Kaua‘i to a 5-3 edge in the opener of a double-header yesterday at Vidinha Stadium.
But Waimea came back with Steven Werner holding Raider bats to just four hits in Game 2 to give the Menehune a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
That win puts the Menehune at 2-3 for the season. The opening win gives Kaua‘i the first round title in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation baseball season to close at 5-1.
One more game remains before the round ends. Waimea host Kapa‘a on Wednesday at the Hanapepe Stadium.
Allianic went the full seven innings in the crucial Game 1 for Kaua‘i which picked up the win with five runs on nine hits. In that outing, Allianic gave up three runs and six hits while striking out eight Waimea batters and walking three.
Kelly Batis, throwing opposite Allianic, suffered the loss in six innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on nine Kaua‘i hits. He finished by striking out five Red Raider batters and allowing no walks.
Kaua‘i opened early, getting a pair of runs across on three hits and two Waimea miscues. With one away, Andrew Renaud got first on an error and scored on Leanio’s RBI shot. Schyler Arakaki drove Leanio home for the opening marks.
Kaua‘i added three more runs. Rysan Sakamoto, got first on an error in the second, and scored on a Renaud RBI.
Braden Balocan opened the fourth inning on a single followed by Dustin Prem singling and both runners scoring on an RBI sacrifice fly by Renaud for the 5-0 bulge.
Waimea answered with three of its runs all coming in the fifth inning as Kailan Malama, Kalani Fernandez and Allen Pancho marked for the Menehune. The Menehune finished with six hits before coming back in Game 2 when they picked up the win on 11 hits.
Max Agor opened with a double followed by Pancho marking an RBI triple, scoring on a Batis RBI for two runs which was answered by a single run in the bottom of the first inning when Sakamoto, drawing first on a Waimea error, scored on an Aaron Soong RBI.
But that was the only run Kaua‘i could muster as Werner held the Raiders to just two more hits through the remaining frames.
Agor opened the third inning with one away and scored for the second time on another Batis RBI single for the 3-1 lead that stood until the top of the seventh when Keith Nonaka and Malama pushed the final three runs across with RBI hits.
Batis drew first on a walk followed by Michael Acoba getting aboard on a Raider error to set the stage for Nonaka’s RBI shot, driving both runners home. Malama followed with an RBI triple to cross Nonaka.
