WAILUA — Cory Oride shot par and Wiley Yoshioka was a stroke back on the Front Nine of the Wailua Golf Course Saturday.
Oride finished the back nine 2-over-par for a day’s best 74 to lead the Kaua‘i High School boys team to its second straight win at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf match played at the Wailua Golf Course.
Kaua‘i finished the day with a 316 team score for the boys followed by Kapa‘a High School’s 349 and Waimea rounding out the front at 362.
Playing on the heels of the 2008 Kaua‘i Collegiate Challenge hosted by Western Kentucky University, the KIF golfers had the advantage of playing on a collegiate layout for the course, said Ed Okamoto of the Wailua Golf Course.
“This is not your everyday layout,” Okamoto said. “This is the finals at collegiate layout so the staff worked to make it challenging. The high school and Junior Golf kids benefit from this because they get to play at the higher level.”
But playing behind the collegiate players had its drawbacks as well as Kaua‘i coach Ipo Yoshioka noted that because the college players were ahead of the high school players, their play ended later than normal, not a serious disadvantage.
Joining Oride and Yoshioka, Levi Miyashiro carded a 1-over-par 37 on the Wailua back nine to finish with 79 (42-37), five strokes off the pace. Yoshioka finished with a 78 (37-41), four strokes off the pace. Taylor Bell (42-43-85) and Kyle Furusho (46-40-86) rounded out the Red Raider team scoring.
Sean Mamaclay also finished the back nine with a 1-over-par 37 to lead the Kapa‘a boys team with an 83 (46-37). He was followed by Justin Uegawa and Kevin Wataya who both shot identical score 85’s (40-45).
Anderson Dreisch finished with a 94 (47-47) and Aaron Belmonte, firing a 45 on the front nine, DQed.
Waimea’s Jake Kuzen (44-45) and Joshua Waalani Matsusaka (43-46) paced the Menehune boys with 89s. They were followed by Justin Moriguchi (46-46-92) who finished three strokes off the Waimea pace. Aaron Medeiros (44-49-93) followed four strokes off the Waimea pace and Grant Paiste (46-48-94) followed a stroke back.
Gabby Saiki of Kapa‘a set the pace for the girls competition, finishing with an 82 (43-39) and was joined by Alex Dorn who ventured out into the KIF course for the first time to finish with a 135 (72-63).
Following Saiki, Kaua‘i’s Rae-Lynn Morikawa finished with a 93 (48-45) chased two strokes back by Waimea’s Melissa Kagawa (46-47-95) who made a strong comeback following her match last week.
Other golfers joining the field included Eric Gyett of Kula High & Intermediate who carded a 111 (55-56), the same score netted by Island School’s Adam Kling (58-53-111). Trevor Blum led the Island School boys with a 96 (58-53).
KIF Golf enters its third week this Saturday when matches move to the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course with the first group scheduled to tee off starting at 11:30 a.m.
