McKinley, 45, Kaua‘i 42 – Kaua‘i High School’s Travis Stine passed to Basil Walton with two seconds left for the Raiders’ last 3-point shot to tie the game and send it overtime. The shot bounced off the rim and buzzer went off giving the McKinley High School Tigers the 45-42, first round win in the First Hawaiian/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II State Basketball Championships yesterday at Pearl City High School.
Kaua‘i trailed by 9 points heading into the final two-minute stretch when Tino Ramos came up with a steal to connect with Tyrus Ceria-Lux, who made good on a layup. Ceria-Lux would later bank a free throw to close the gap on the Tigers.
With just more than a minute left, McKinley turned over the ball which resulted in a 3-pointer by Kaua‘i to bring them within reach.
Walton led the Raiders with 20 points. Tana Woodard led the Tigers with 14.
Kaua‘i (0-1 HHSAA, 8-1 overall) falls to the consolation to play the Pine Lads of Lana‘i High School (0-1, 10-4) at 4 p.m. today at Pearl City.
University 53, Kapa‘a 31
The Kapa‘a High School’s girls basketball team are coming home. The Lady Warriors fell to the Junior Rainbows of University Lab School yesterday 53-31 in the consolation game held at Kalani High School.
Destiny Smith led the Lady Warriors with 15 points while Ruthie Tusie of the Junior ’Bows also had 15. This knocks Kapa‘a out of the state tournament, which continues through tomorrow night. Kapa‘a finishes with a record of 6-4.
University (1-1, 9-3) stays in the consolation round and will play Seabury Hall (1-1, 11-4) for seventh place.
