Kaua‘i surfers take top honors at Pinetrees
Five Kaua‘i surfers took home top honors over the weekend in the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s Contest No. 6 at Pinetrees on the North Shore.
Tyler Newton finished first in the Open Mens division, Koa Smith took the Explorer Boys division, Ka‘oli Kahokuloa won the Longboard division, Pierre Graham won the Open Mini Grom division and Malia Manuel won the Explorer Girls division.
Kaua‘i placed surfers in the top six in nine of the 11 events that went off over the weekend.
The next NSSA contest is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Pinetrees.
There are only two competitions left for the Hawai‘i region.
The NSSA Hawaiian tour consists of nine contests across the state. Contestants accumulate points and at the year’s end, regional champions are named. Then, the contestants go on to the national event at Trestles in California.
The NSSA combines surfing and scholastic achievements, requiring participants to maintain a 2.0 or better grade point average. Scholarships are presented yearly to outstanding students.
