Fortunata Velasco

Fortunata Velasco of Lihu‘e died at the Garden Isle Healthcare Center on Jan. 16, 2008, at the age of 71. Born in the Philippines on Oct. 14, 1936, she was a cook.

She is survived by husband Jay Velasco of the Philippines; sons Emerson Velasco of the Philippines, Edwin Valesco of the Philippines, Elmer (Suzima) Velasco of the Philippines, Jerry (May) Velasco of the Philippines, Jimmy (Duquesa) Velasco of Lihu‘e; six grandchildren; mother-in-law Juana Velasco; sister-in-law Basillia (Ireneo) Asuncion; brother-in-law Dominador (Mely) Velasco; brothers and sisters in the Philippines; numerous nieces and nephews in Hawai‘i.

Viewing will be held from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Immaculate Conception Church. Mass will begin at 10 a.m. with cremation to follow. Casual attire is suggested.

Kimie Matsuyoshi

Kimie Matsuyoshi of Kapa‘a died at her home on Jan. 17, 2008, at the age of 88. Born in Japan on Oct. 22, 1919, she was a housekeeper.

She is survived by daughter Irene (Michael) Johnston of Kapa‘a; son Nobuhiro (Cathay) Matsuyoshi; grandchildren Maycia (Shane) Villacruzes, Kiilani Matsuyoshi and Noa Matsuyoshi; a sister and five brothers, all residing in Japan.

Viewing will be held from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25, at the Lihue Hongwanji Mission. Services will begin at 2 p.m. Casual attire is suggested.

Timothy Gerad Nunes Sr.

Timothy Gerad Nunes Sr. of Kalaheo died at Straub Hospital on Jan. 19, 2008, at the age of 59. Born in Waimea on Nov. 18, 1948, he was a self-employed auto mechanic for Sears, Taba Bros. and Bill’s Service.

He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Octavia Nunes; his brother Robert Nunes.

He is survived by his wife Bernadette Nunes; four children Timothy Nunes, Jr., Serena Soto, Terri (Christopher) Cardenas and Shanna Nunes; sisters Mildred Orsatelli, Shirley Martin, Majorie Nunes and Loretta Grace; grandchildren Sheldon (Brandee) Soto, Bryson Soto, Shantel Cardenas, Jasmine Cardenas, Kierra Soto, Taelyn Nunes and Roechelle Cardenas; great-granddaughter Camron Soto; numerous nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Borthwick Kauai Mortuary Chapel in Koloa. Memorial services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Casual attire is suggested.

Basilio Manguchei

Basilio Manguchei of Lihu‘e died at the Garden Isle Healthcare Center on Jan. 20, 2008, at the age of 78. Born in Kapa‘a on June 14, 1929, he was a laborer.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie Lee Manguchei of Hanama‘ulu; daughters Deborah (Rocky) Perreira of Hanama‘ulu, Linda Hilton of Texas; sons Richard Henderson of Kaumakani, Robert Henderson of Texas and Clifford Bauerle of Texas; sister Kelly McGill of Florida; sister-in-law Julia Manguchei of Wailua; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Viewing will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at the Borthwick Kauai Mortuary Chapel in Koloa. Prayer services will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Casual attire is suggested.

Kokichi Isonaga

Kokichi Isonaga of Koloa passed away at his home on Jan. 6, 2008, at the age of 90. Born in Koloa on April 13, 1917, he was the owner of Isonaga Jeweler. He is survived by a son, Eric Isonaga of Lawa‘i; daughters Irene Isonaga of Koloa and Lorna (Stanley) Kapahu; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother Herbert Isonaga of O‘ahu; and two sisters, Chito Isonaga and Anne Isonaga, both of Koloa. Services were private.

Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.


Lillian Shimoyo Sugibayashi

Lillian Shimoyo Sugibayashi of Wailua Houselots passed away at Hale Kupuna Heritage Home on Jan. 16, 2008, at the age of 98. She was born in Anahola on Jan. 5, 1910.

She is survived by brothers Y. Charles Tanigawa, Mineo Tanigawa, both of Lihu‘e, and Katsuki Tanigawa and Yaeo Tanigawa, both of Honolulu; sisters Carolyn Sakai of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and Iris Fukui of Honolulu; numerous nieces and nephews. Services were private.

Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.


Bruce Marcus Horka

Bruce Marcus Horka passed away peacefully on January 11, 2008 after a long battle with cancer.  He was born on April 29, 1951 in Cleveland Ohio.  His death follows that of his parents Joseph and Anna Horka.  He is survived by his wife Rose; children Travis and Tairoy (and Leila); and brother Duane Horka, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws and loving friends.  Bruce was in the United States Navy and served two tours aboard the USS Independence.  He was the founder and owner of Custom Landscaping and Maintenance for the past 22 years.  Since semi-retiring, he had spent much of his time with loved ones in Grass Valley, California where he enjoyed hunting, going on RV trips and sharing his “home away from home.”  He was a leading husband, loving father, generous friend, and Man of God.  We were blessed to have known him and long for the day that we will meet again in heaven.  Services will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at Calvary Chapel Kapaa where Bruce was a longtime member.  Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m. and the ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. The family asks that flowers be omitted.

David Kaheleiki ‘Bear’ Kaaumoana

David Kaheleiki ‘Bear’ Kaaumoana died at his home in Kakaako, O‘ahu, on Jan. 19, 2008, after a long battle with Alaheimer’s disease at the. A lifelong son of Kaua’i, he and his wife have resided in O‘ahu for the past few years. He was born Nov. 26, 1933, in Hanalei. He was 74 years old.

‘Bear’ Kaaumoana, a proud Hawaiian, is profoundly mourned by his family and has long been missed on Kaua‘i’s North Shore by his many friends for his wonderful musical talent and his gentle personality and laughing smile.

After graduating from Kaua‘i High School, he joined the Marines and served in Korea. Later, home in Kaua‘i, he worked as a heavy equipment operating engineer. Following his retirement, he, his ‘ukulele and his wife traveled extensively throughout the Mainland, Europe and Asia.

Kaaumoana was predeceased by his first wife, Ardith Laamea Kaaumoana, and daughters Cindy Keala (Pa) Kaaumoana and Linda Puanani Texeira.

‘Bear’ Kaaumoana is survived by his wife, Nanette Slavin Kaaumoana; daughters Merla Ann Nalani Kaaumoana, Doreen Haumani Soares and Tammy Leilani (Ronald) Contrades, all of Kaua‘i; 22 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; step-children Michael (Emily) Rakieten, also his caregiver, Timothy Rakieten of Honolulu, Daniel (Michelle) Rakieten and Dorothy Rakieten of Michigan; four step-grandchildren; brothers Richard Kaaumoana of Honolulu, Harry (Barbara) Kaaumoana and step-brother John (Nani) Kuehu; sisters Rebecca Maka of Kaua‘i and Hannah Lopez of Maui; numerous beloved nieces and nephews; and his companion dog, Kokoleka.

Visitation with the family will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., with services beginning at 11 a.m. at Hanalei Chapel Church of Latter Day Saints. Burial will follow at Kauai Memorial Gardens in Lihu‘e. Family requests aloha attire. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Ed Carl Requilman

Ed Carl Requilman of Kapa‘a died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Jan. 13, 2008, at the age of 57. Born in Washington on Nov. 30, 1950, he was a contractor.

He is survived by girlfriend Laurie Hugentugler; daughters Monica Requilman Schiffer and Erika Requilman Valente; grandchildren Breeann, Bailey and Janey; sisters Jude (Chuck) George, Linda (Richard) Oshiro and Nancy (James) Tashima; brother Robert (Mary) Requilman; mother Michi Carlos; numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 26, at Lydgate Park. The event will be a potluck. For more information, call Robert 634-6761.
