Kun Cha U, born Feb. 25, 1943, died on Dec. 12, 2007, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, at the age of 64. She was born in Gumma Ken, Japan to the late U Sang Duk and Kim Tae Yun, and grew up in Taegu, Korea.
She is survived by daughters Iris (Brandon) Erickson of Kalaheo, Kimberly (Jeremy) Foster of Lihu‘e, and Suzy (Markeal) Johnson of Las Vegas, Nev.; eight grandchildren, lifelong friend and companion Richard Fukushima; brothers: Young Bok (Ae Cha) U of Kapa‘a, Yong Su (Mi Soon) U of Virginia; sisters Bok Sun Woo of Korea, Song Ja Yoo of Las Vegas, Nev., and Soon Gu (Jay) Gu of Virginia. She was preceded in death by Yong Ki U of Kapa‘a. Her grandchildren are: Kaitlynn, Hailey, Breannah, Mikah, Savannah, Shaelynn, Ashlynn and Alexander.
Kun Cha worked at the Coco Palms Resort Hotel, and later ventured out to start the first Korean restaurant in Lihu‘e, known as Kun Ja’s Delicatessen Restaurant.
Kun Cha’s hard work, diligence and pleasing the palates of the community through her cooking gave her great joy and satisfaction. Her Korean food with some local flavor was enjoyed by many of her customers.
Her passions were cooking, meeting new people and traveling Upon retiring she spent her time traveling to Korea, the Mainland and Hawai‘i.
Services will be at Borthwick Mortuary in Koloa on Friday. Viewing starts at 3 p.m., followed by services at 5 p.m. Services held by Pastor Matt Higa from New Hope Kauai at Kapa‘a.
Casual attire requested by the family.
