Alfred Fernandes
Alfred Primo Fernandes, 91, of New Plymouth, Idaho, died Nov. 18, 2007, at West Valley Medical Center, Caldwell.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the First Baptist Church, New Plymouth. Interment to follow at Park View Cemetery, New Plymouth. Funeral services and arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, New Plymouth.
Born April 16, 1916, to Frank and Rose (Gomes) Fernandes in Waimea, Hawai‘i, he grew up in Waimea where he attended grammar school and graduated from Kaua‘i High School. Alfred married Myrtle Silva on Feb. 22, 1941, in Waimea, Hawai‘i. During World War II, he worked as a paymaster for the Army Corps of Engineers. After the war, he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service and served as the Postmaster in Waimea until his retirement.
Alfred and Myrtle moved to Caldwell in 1970 and then to New Plymouth in 1991 to be near their daughter, Nadine.
He is survived by his wife Myrtle of New Plymouth; his daughter Nadine (Horton) Sigman (Mike) of New Plymouth; sisters Frances Dommel (Paul) of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Margaret Trosclair of New Orleans, La.,; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Alfred is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William and Alex; and a great-granddaughter Matriaka.

Fusae ‘Edith’ Tanaka
Fusae “Edith” Tanaka, of Honolulu, died Oct. 31, 2007, in Honolulu at the age of 93.
Born in ‘Ele‘ele, she was a retired, self-employed seamstress.
She is survived by daughters Maureen Tanaka, Carolee Aoki and Jean Tanaka; sister Kikue “Kay” Napoleon; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A private service was held. Arrangements were handled by Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary.
Merlestine H. Ponce
Merlestine H. Ponce died on Nov. 16, 2007, at the age of 56.
Born on Dec. 16, 1950, she was a loving mother and wife, survived by her husband Richard Ponce; sons Richard Jr. and Mike; daughters Janea and Rachelle Garcia; and grandsons Isaiah and Elijah.
Memorial services will be on Nov. 23, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. viewing. Funeral will be on Nov. 24 in Alameda, Calif.
