The Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i high school football teams take the field tonight at Vidinha Stadium in what Kaua‘i coach Derek Borrero anticipates will be a competitive game.
“The fact of the matter is, they’ve got athletes there,” Borrero said. “Once they get together, they look like they’ve got a pretty good offense. At any time, Kapa‘a can beat Kaua‘i or Waimea.”
Kapa‘a (0-4, 1-5 overall) came close to getting its first win last week when it led 14-7 going into halftime against Waimea High School (3-1, 6-1).
“We took what they did very seriously,” Borrero said. “I respect the coaches there and they’re players. I think what happened last week is an example of how this league could be like.”
Tonight also happens to be the first of the homecoming weeks to come, must-wins for the most part on the home team.
“It might not be that easy,” he said.
Kapa‘a, however isn’t feeling too much pressure.
“We feel a lot better this week,” said Kapa‘a head coach Steve Kaui. “We’ll just give it our all. With the quality of what we’ve brought to the game, I think the boys are pleased.”
At last meeting between the Raiders and the Warriors, the Raiders outscored them 43-7. But Kapa‘a has made progress as the season went on.
“I’m sure Derek is very prepared for us,” Kaui said. “They’ve got a great defense and their offense, it’s obvious they can score.”
The junior varsity team starts the night at 5 p.m. Varsity kickoff is set for 7:35 p.m.
