WAIMEA — The Waimea High School gym was filled with celebration last night as the girls volleyball team clinched Round 2 of Kaua‘i Interscholastic play.
The competition between Waimea and Kaua‘i High School was tough, going to five games, with Waimea overcoming Round 1 champs Kaua‘i 23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-13 and 15-9.
The seniors from both sides came out in full force last night.
Waimea’s Tatum Gonsalves seemed to avoid the blocks registering 22 kills. Setter Josey Jacinto racked up her stats with 37 assists, three kills and four aces. Cheri Kua had six blocks (5 double, 1 solo). Sheana Mata also posted six blocks (all doubles).
For Kaua‘i, Jamilee Jimenez had 15 kills and Jewell Villatora had 31 assists.
Waimea (3-0, 5-2) still has one more game on its schedule set for Saturday against Kapa‘a High School (1-2, 2-5).
Kaua‘i (1-3, 4-4) will now play Waimea in a playoff game next week to determine who will be the KIF champion. That team will then go on to the Division II state volleyball tournament on O‘ahu later this month.
