Brad Ettinger of California defeated Kaua‘i’s Evan Valiere, Maui’s Belly Kemper and fellow Californian Adam Virs in the finals of the No Fear Mexican Surf Fiesta on Saturday in San Miguel, Calif.
The Association of Surfing Professionals World Qualifying Series 2-Star event finished a day early to stem off the projected poor conditions on the final day of the waiting period.
Kilauea’s Tyler Newton, who was competing in his first WQS, was able to make it to the quarterfinals where he finished fourth in his heat.
Poi‘pu’s Kyle Ramey got a bit farther in the competition. Ramey made it to the semifinals, but finished third in his heat.
In the final, Ettinger sat in fourth for the majority of the heat, but caught a break at the last minute.
The wave garnered him a solid 8.25 out of a possible 10 and rocketed Ettinger from fourth to first. For that, Ettinger won $5,000.
Kemper finished in second place and won $2,500.
Valiere finished fourth and took home $1,500 in prize money. Other Hawai‘i surfers who competed in the event were David Gonsalves and Macy Mullen.
