Prison overcrowding, sex-offender re-entry and reintegration, public safety, reducing recidivism and prisoner rehabilitation. Given this year’s rash of copper thefts and crimes committed by ex-convicts, the question before the state Public Safety Department and the Legislature is how best to reform inmates so that they can “stay straight” when they are released after completing their sentences.
The Hawai‘i State Legislative Public Safety Oversight Committee will be discussing this and related issues today at the Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center, 3353 Eono St., from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. An overview of current prison conditions will be discussed, as well as mental health issues, and rehabilitation efforts.
