Robert ‘Bob’ Britt
Robert “Bob” Britt, 56, died July 14, 2007, at his home in Princeville at the age of 56 after a long and valiant battle against liver disease following an initially successful transplant in the fall.
Born in Santa Monica, Calif., Bob and his wife moved to the North Shore of O‘ahu in 1978 from L.A. seeking better surf and cleaner air and then onto the North Shore of Kaua‘i in the spring of 1980. Bob died surrounded by his loving family: wife Petrina of 27 years and sons Justin (32), Jake (22) and Jesse (20), his adoring Great Dane, Murphy, were in attendance along with some amazing caregiving help. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Bradley, of Big Bear, Calif., and nephews Josh and Levy of Ventura, Calif.
Bob was a complete original known for his classic outspoken attitude and straight-on approach to life. He was known as “Supa” to his sons, and as “Grandmaster Flash” around the Wailua MX track, where his unflagging motocross talent was admired by all. Bob was forever a kid at heart who loved to play and strove to have the biggest and best toys. He never did confess to his wife the true number of motorcycles he owned over the years though the guess is at least 30. During his 27 years on Kaua’i, he would most likely be spotted waterskiing the Wailua River, dirt- bike riding or surfing. His love of athleticism lives on in his sons with each of them now pursuing his own athletic interest.
Bob was also an exceptionally talented finish carpenter, working for the union upon moving to Kaua‘i after he completed many high-end custom homes in the Malibu area and on O‘ahu. He ran the “Kilo,” one of the first tour boats and sport fishing charters on the North Shore and down Napali Coast before it became the major attraction it is today. His biggest legacy is the beautiful home he designed and built for his family with only two other carpenters in the Princeville area before retiring to devote his time to be a hands-on dad. He was one of the few fathers at Hanalei Elementary School who accompanied classes on field trips and always made it a priority to be there for his family. While Bob kept a low profile in the community ,he was a very special man who touched the lives of all who were lucky enough to know him. He will be dearly missed by both family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob’s memory can be sent to The Hawaii Medical Center Foundation, Attn: Transplant Institute, P.O. Box 30100, Honolulu, HI 96820 with a note in the memo line “For Transplant Institute”. This will help others get a second shot at life as Bob did. There will be an informal celebration of Bob’s life at the family home on Sunday, Aug. 12, starting at 3 p.m.
