Runner of 8K race from Ha’ena to Hanelei Pier slap hands of friends just a few yards from the finish line
The Hanalei Canoe Club hosted its 27th Annual Ha‘ena to Hanalei 8 Mile Run/Walk, 5 Run, 1 Mile Youth Run yesterday.
Hundreds turned out for the race and post-race pancake breakfast.
Suzanne Messinger of Hanalei was the winner of the 8 Mile Run with a time of 49:44, while Tyler Bundy of Princeville won the Keiki Mile Run with a time of 5:17.

Due to lack of space, the rest of the results will run in tomorrow’s Scoreboard.
Deadline for ‘Play to Learn’ is tomorrow
The Kaua‘i District Tennis association along with the USTA Hawai‘i Pacific section will conduct “Play to Learn,” a tennis program for kids 5 to 18 years old.
The deadline to register is tomorrow.
The program will run on Mondays and Thursdays, June 14 to July 23 at the Kaua‘i Community College Tennis Courts. Beginners sessions run from 2 to 3 p.m. and Intermediate/Advanced level sessions run 3 to 4 p.m.
The fee for six sessions is $30.
NYC Junior Series starts Thursday
The first race of the Junior Invitational Series starts 5 p.m.Thursday at the Nawiliwili Harbor.
Hosted by the Nawiliwili Yacht Club, the Junior Series consists of four races, each Thursday in June, where each boat must have a Junior sailor, ages between 14 to 21, aboard to be eligible.
The public is invited to watch the races from the Nawiliwili jetty wall, and join the fun at the post-race party at the NYC Clubhouse.
First flag is at 5 p.m.
Namolokama holds open water Swim
The Namolokama O’ Hanalei Canoe Club is hosting the 1st Annual Hanalei Bay Open Water Swim community event on July 7.
Registration will be at 7 a.m. that day, next to the Hanalei Pier with the youth events starting at 9 a.m. Keiki will swim around the Hanalei Pier in two events: 8-and-under and 9 to 13 years old. A 1/2 mile swim is available for 13 to 18 year olds, and a 1-mile swim is for all adult age groups.
These distances will be from the pier towards the Pavilion, around a buoy and back to the pier.
Pre-registration needs to be completed by June 27 or earlier. Forms are available either on the Web site, www.namolokama.com, or at various surf and bike shops or athletic or swim clubs.
Those interested in participating must fill out both the registration and waiver forms and mail them back to PO Box 729, Hanalei, HI 96714.
