The man who died Saturday at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, after a surf session ended in a rescue attempt by a fellow surfer at Wailua Bay, has been identified as Jeffrey Ellison, 62.
Ellison was spotted by a surfer who tried to save him by bringing him to shore on his board.
However, Ellison slipped off the board and stopped breathing, according to police.
Though lifeguards administered CPR to Ellison on shore and medics continued en route to Wilcox Memorial hospital, Ellison was later pronounced dead.
The death marks the third water related death on island this year. In February, a California visitor drowned on the North Shore. Robert “Kai” Martin died earlier in that week after a surfing accident at Wainiha Beach.
County spokesperson Mary Daubert said officials were not informed where Ellison was from or how he died.
