Take off your shoes and step on the scale.
That’s what 28 mixed martial arts fighters did yesterday as they weighed in for today’s Garden Island Cage Match V at the Hanapepe Stadium.
There will be 11 mixed martial arts bouts, one male kickboxing bout, one women’s kickboxing bout and one women’s mixed martial arts bout, for 14 bouts total. This also marks the first ever women’s MMA match.
Most of the fighters come from either O‘ahu or the West Coast.
Six of the fighters hail from Kaua‘i, John Rosario, Kaimi Bermoy, Keoni Bigno, Sherri Ephan, Eben Kaneshiro and Taurus Cabbab. Kaneshiro and Cabbab are billed as the co-main events as Kaneshiro takes on Buck Bisbey from Seattle for the Lightweight title and Cabbab takes on Mario Miranda, also from Seattle, for the Light Heavyweight title.
“Eben and Taurus are so go, they had to be co-main events,” said event promoter Vance Pascua. “There’s a lot of martial artists here on Kaua‘i.”
Pascua said there are usually two of these events a year.
General admission is $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Ringside tickets are also available for $35 in advance, $40 at the door. Doors open at 5 p.m.
