Team Central and the Gee’s Angels were named as the outstanding boys and girls teams, respectively, in the county’s 12 and Under basketball program.
Team Central survived a 44-43 win in its final game against the Gee Unit to finish with an undefeated season behind the showing of its key players Duke Puali, Keane Agoot and John Das. Team Central is coached by Clarence Sales who will return with a 14 and Under team that will debut starting next week.
Reggie McCabe and Mahea Hanie-Grace supported their roles as key players for the Gee’s Angels by being named to the all-tournament team at Na Paniolo Classic tournament on the Big Island over the weekend.
The Angels went on to take the championship of that tournament, defeating the reigning champion Na Paniolo team in the quarterfinals.
Dustin Gummerus led the Kalaheo Heat to capture the Sportsmanship Award in the 12 and Under boys program and coach Pedro Saligumba led Kaulupono who captured the Participation award.
On the girls side, Russell Grady coached the Island Heat who demonstrated the essence of sportsmanship in its final game against Wailua.
In that contest, Wailua scored a season-high 20 points with all players scoring but one. Additionally, the fledgling team that is comprised of a lot of 10-year-olds, tied the contest twice, and at one point early in the second period, had a 6-4 lead over the Heat.
