It came down to one basket.
But with less than six seconds on the clock and faced with a point deficit, Kaua‘i’s Jordan Cox launched the sphere from beyond the three-point arc. The ball rattled off the rim and Waimea’s Greg Griffin snagged it to give Waimea a 42-41 seat-hanging victory before a near-capacity crowd at the Raiderdome Friday night.
Waimea’s Chris Newcomb had bonus foul shots tagged onto his field goals three times in the evening.
Twice, his bonus came up empty, but his third — with seven seconds showing — pulled Waimea into the lead for good.
Griffin never sniffed the scorebooks but his critical play iced the win despite Newcomb leading all scorers with 20 points.
Similarly, Kaimana Girod scored his only pair in the second quarter when Waimea rebounded from a 6-16 opening quarter to outgun Kaua‘i 12-4, pulling to within two, 20-18 at the half.
The aggressive defense displayed by both teams kept Kaua‘i empty as Dana Tayco marked the scorebooks for the first time on a bucket that tied the contest 20-20. Tayco went on to add a charity pair with 1:22 left to giveWaimea a 40-39 lead.
Calsen Agrade added his only two buckets in a see-saw third period before fouling out with more than a minute in the game. Before that, though, he threw in several valuable feeds to Newcomb in the paint.
Vincent Geronimo added six points, Bradly Frasco finished with four and a pair from Bolden Villanueva rounded out the Menehune math.
Jordan Cox and Travis Stine led the Kaua‘i scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Cox ended his scoring with a three before missing the last shot of the contest, also from beyond the arc.
Treston Rego added six and a number of rebounds in heavy traffic. Justin Ramos and Basil Walton each finished with five, with Ramos also bagging one from three-point range.
With the win, Waimea enjoys a bye Tuesday night with a 2-0 standing while Kaua‘i travels to the Bernice Hundley in Kapa‘a to meet up with the Warriors. Both teams are 0-1.
Tipoff for the JV contest is 5:30 p.m. with the varsity game to follow.
KQNG Am570 will broadcast the varsity contest with Anahola Joel Pahukula.
